Maryanne has now successfully completed the Comps for her Phd program, with 3 written exams April 7th, 9th and 11th, followed by the oral exam today. Reading 200 books in preparation for these comprehensive exams required a lot of endurance and perseverance.
Congratulations Mary, you have made a major accomplishment. You have gone a long way since we first saw you head off to school. You will do great as you move on to the next phase.

Haha! I was awesome in playschool. I think I'm going to make that my new Facebook profile picture.
Thanks, Papa!
That picture was from kindergarten. It was September '85.
"Le Lunch" made me happy :) Mary's too cute!
From the dates on the photo album we thought this was in 1985. It definitely is from the first day of playschool in 1984 before Mary turned 4. I think we chose it to frame the first page of the album because it was just too cute!
Mom
Mary started preparing for her Comps at a very early age. She had a copy of Historiography of the Weimar Republic in "Le Lunch" bag.
Please explain COMPS. Don't you have to write a thesis? At least you will still be there when Ky arrives.
Uncle Al: Comps are comprehensive exams (referred to as "quals" in the US and -- for some reason -- in the English department at UBC), which you do (theoretically) about a year after coursework, after you read about 200 books. Comprehensive exams are to make you more prepared for upper-level teaching, and give you more insight into your broader field of research.
After that: the dissertation. And so I'll be here a few more years, while Ky's here.
